World's first sonic tractor beam (Source: A. Marzo et al. Nat. Commun. 6, 8661, 2015))
British researchers introduced the world's first sonic tractor beams that lift and move objects using soundwaves.
According to article published in Nature Communications, a special device using 64 perfectly coordinated miniature loudspeakers can generate the acoustic hologram without physical contact. This is enough to levitate spherical, expanded polystyrene beads of up to 4 millimeters in diameter. The research was conducted by scientists from Bristol and Sussex, in conjunction with Ultrahaptics, a spin-off set up by Sussex Professor of Informatics, Sriram Subramanian.Source: www.reuters.comOriginal paper and picture source: A.Marzo et al.
